How to Pack a Storage Unit So You Can Actually Find Things Later

The mistakes we see every week on move-in day, and the simple habits that make your unit easy to use months later.

We watch people pack units every week. The ones who come back months later and find what they need in two minutes all do the same few things. None of them are complicated.

Before you arrive

  • Use boxes of two or three sizes, not twenty. Same-size boxes stack straight.
  • Fill boxes fully — half-empty ones crush when something sits on top.
  • Label two sides, not the lid. You'll only ever see the sides.
  • Take legs off tables and bed frames, and tape the screws to the piece.
  • Make sure fridges and washing machines are clean and completely dry.

The loading order that works

  1. Heavy, rarely used items at the back: appliances, bed frames, tool boxes.
  2. Tall flat things along the walls: mattresses on their side, mirrors wrapped in blankets.
  3. Boxes stacked heaviest at the bottom, lightest on top.
  4. Things you might want soon at the front, by the door.

Leave a walkway

If you think you'll come back for anything, leave a narrow path from the door to the back. It costs you a little space and saves you emptying half the unit onto the aisle to reach one box.

Keep a list on your phone

Number your boxes and keep a note of what's in each one. Snap a photo of the unit before you close the shutter. It takes five minutes and you'll thank yourself later.
