What You Shouldn't Put in a Storage Unit (and What to Do Instead)

A short list of things that don't belong in storage — for your safety, your neighbours', and your belongings'.

Most things are fine to store. A few aren't, and it's almost always for the same reasons: they spoil, they're dangerous, or they're too precious to be anywhere but with you.

Never store these

  • Gas cylinders, fuel cans, paint thinners and anything flammable
  • Fireworks, chemicals or anything that could leak
  • Food — including rice, sugar and pet food. It brings in insects.
  • Plants or anything living
  • Anything illegal, obviously

Better kept with you

  • Cash, gold and jewellery
  • Passports, title deeds and original contracts
  • Prescription medicines
  • Hard drives with the only copy of family photos

A bank safe deposit box is the right home for the valuables. For documents, scan everything and keep originals somewhere you can reach quickly.

Fine to store, with a little care

  • Fridges and freezers — defrost, dry and leave the door slightly open.
  • Mattresses — cover them and store on their side.
  • Electronics — original boxes if you have them, wrapped if not.
  • Wooden furniture — wrap in blankets rather than plastic so it can breathe.

Not sure about something? Ask us before move-in day. It's a much easier conversation then than at the shutter.
